Crackerbox 16′ Classic Powerboat built with RAPTOR Brads

“I’ve now used 1500 of the 5/8″ polymer brads to fasten 9mm thick x 27mm wide mahogany strips to one side of my 16′ classic American wooden powerboat hull and have found them to be excellent.”

Gary is building a classic American wooden powerboat first made popular by returning US American GI’s at the end of World War II. He found the design plans on the Glen-L Boat Designs website. The design is named, “Crackerbox”.

“I’ve now used 1500 of the 5/8” polymer brads to fasten 9mm thick x 27mm wide mahogany strips to one side of my 16′ classic American wooden powerboat hull and have found them to be excellent.

The Raptor brads made really easy work of single handedly applying the 6 metre long strips of mahogany when coated in wet marine epoxy adhesive. As you can imagine, holding long strips of glue soaked timber is like handling big lengths of wet spaghetti, so using the Raptor brads made it easy to position the strips accurately and quickly so there were no gaps between them.

This is the third one of these hulls I’ve built over the past 20 years and I had previously used metal staples to apply the mahogany (that needed to be removed afterwards otherwise they would rust). Also, these strip laminated hulls are frequently covered in fibreglass fabric (which is transparent when soaked in epoxy) for the purpose of stopping the strips delaminating later on. Having the Polymer brads as permanent rust proof mechanical fasteners removes the need to do the fibreglassing.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                Regards, Gary”
