I usually like my nails to drive a little proud so that I don’t have to putty the hole. However, I recently started a project with poplar and now the fasteners are driving in too far. Does anyone have any recommendations?

What tool are you using? The B17P.763 and 17P.32 both have adjustable drive depths via the knob that is connected to the safety. If you are using something else you can try lowering the air pressure. I don’t recommend going below 70 psi as the tool may start to malfunction. A more permanent solution would be to slightly shorten the driver blade
